The job

For kids' rooms we spec low-VOC Benjamin Moore paint as the default, not an upgrade. We painted a Leslieville kids' room in Pink Cloud with low-VOC product throughout — walls, trim, the lot. Lower-emission paint also means less odour while the room airs out.

The second requirement is washability. Crayon, fingerprints, and sticker residue are wall problems in this room, so the walls get a washable eggshell rather than flat. Trim, doors, and window sills get a harder finish that survives toys.

Furniture and toys are moved to the centre and covered, floors are protected, and outlet plates come off before we open a can. Prep matters more here than most rooms — anchor holes from shelves and decals leave marks that need patching and priming before the new colour goes on.
