Reading Nook & Accent Wall Painting in Toronto
Small spaces are where colour is cheapest to try and hardest to fake. A nook or a single accent wall is a genuine one-day job — but the edges are all the work.

A reading nook is mostly edges: shelf lines, ceiling angles, window trim, the seam where the accent colour meets the main wall. There is almost no open rolling. That is why a small space is a hand-cutting job, and why a wavy line ruins it faster than a wrong colour would.
We painted a Riverdale nook in Smokey Taupe matte as a weekend project. An earth tone in a small alcove does what small-space colour should: it separates the nook from the room around it without needing any construction.
Accent walls follow the same rules. Darker shades work in small doses, matte hides the texture of older plaster walls, and a strong colour over a light base usually takes an extra coat.
What’s included
Prep and repair
Shelf pin holes, anchor holes, and corner cracks patched and sanded, then spot-primed. Small spaces sit at eye level, so the prep shows more, not less.
Protection
Built-in shelving emptied, shelf surfaces masked, window trim taped, floor covered. If the nook has a bench cushion or curtains, they come out before sanding.
Paint and coats
Benjamin Moore Regal Select standard, Aura as the upgrade. Two coats; a dark accent shade over a light base often needs a third. Built-ins get cabinet-grade Benjamin Moore Advance.
Cleanup and walkthrough
Same-day cleanup, plates and hardware back on, and a final walkthrough of every wall with you before you pay.
Colour suggestions
Colours we have used in this room
Colours below come from small-space and accent work we have already painted in Toronto.
Smokey Taupe
Matte
Our Riverdale nook. A warm earth tone that separates the alcove from the room without darkening it.
Hale Navy
HC-154Matte
The deep navy we have used on dining and feature walls. In a nook it works as a one-wall dose of dark colour.
Cheating Heart
1617Matte
The near-black accent from our warm neutral set. For nooks that want contrast against white shelving.
How long it takes
Most nooks and single accent walls are done in a day. Our Riverdale nook ran as a weekend project.
A dark shade over a light base often needs an extra coat, and built-in shelving painted in cabinet enamel needs drying time between coats — both are scheduling questions we settle at the walkthrough.
What it costs
Small jobs are quoted after a walkthrough rather than from a standard band. For reference, our condo cost guide lists exposed-brick or accent wall work at $400–$1,200 depending on the surface. Your written quote is fixed once you sign.

- Do you take small jobs like one accent wall or a nook?
- Yes. Our Riverdale reading nook was a weekend project. Small jobs are real jobs — they are mostly hand-cut edge work, which is exactly what you hire a painter for.
- How much does an accent wall cost in Toronto?
- It depends on the surface and the colour change, so we quote after a walkthrough. For reference, our condo cost guide lists exposed-brick or accent wall work at $400–$1,200. The quote is fixed once you sign.
- What colours work in a small space?
- Small spaces take colour well because the dose is small. We used Smokey Taupe matte in a Riverdale nook — an earth tone that defines the alcove without making it feel smaller. Deep shades like Hale Navy also work as a single-wall dose. Matte finishes hide the wall texture that small spaces put at eye level.
- Can you paint the built-in shelving too?
- Yes. Built-in shelving gets cabinet-grade Benjamin Moore Advance rather than wall paint — it cures to a harder finish that handles books and hands. It needs longer drying time between coats, which we build into the schedule.
- Is one wall really worth hiring a painter for?
- If the wall meets a ceiling, trim, or a second colour, the whole result rides on the line quality. A hand-cut line between two colours is the difference between an accent wall and a paint spill. It is a small invoice for us and a permanent edge for you.
